MISTER THOMAS HINGLEY
In 1988, Inspiral Carpets had just had their first proper single, `Planecarsh EP`, this also became the time TOM HINGLEY emerged from sleepy Oxford to join the rising stars of the Manchester music scene. His smooth voice and clean cut pop star looks was the final piece in the emerging jigsaw that saw the band.
The Roses and The Mondays became a pop sensation and the Inspirals were the final cornerstone in the triumphant Manc trio who were the sound of young Britain in 1989/90.
A triumphant run of singles, a tough non-stop world tour schedule and a smart handling of the media saw the Inspiral Carpets right at the vanguard of the new order. They may not have been the kings of the E scene like The Mondays or the coolest band in the world like the Stone Roses but no-one could deny their effortless knocking out one great pop tune after another .Their most famous songs will be` Saturn 5` and` This is how it feels` still can be heard today.
Today Tom Hingley can be heard on his own or with his new The Lovers. Last year his latest album. Thames Valley Delta Blues (TVDB) IS A SEQUEL TO Tom Hingley`s critically acclaimed 2000 album release. Keep Britian Tidy. It is a record that embraces musical elements as diverse as blues, folk, soul & punk. TVDB sees Tom discussing the world in 2009 including mass consumerism, debt, recession and ecstasy.
“I didn`t make the record I should have done for my career, I made the record I felt I had to make”, say Tom. TVDB represents gospel music for people with no religion. Whereas Keep Britain Untidy was an album discussing the breakup of Tom`s marriage TVDB discusses a whole heap of other subjects.
During his early years, Tom and the band had a young Noel Gallagher as a roadie, today Tom plays songs more personal to himself.
He will be headlining the RAGING BULL night at The Bull On Friday 10 Sept when the new name for the music room comes into effect, THE SOUNDHOUSE will be born and what better way to start the new era. Supporting Tom will be The 633 and We Are Embassy
